April Showers?

We came to Hot Springs and Lake Ouachita State Park on Tuesday. Like most Arkansas State Parks the sites are very well done, and we have full hook-ups.

The forecast was for rain, lots of rain. Wednesday we ran errands all day and the rain held off.

But it started raining Wednesday evening and rained all day Thursday. Water was running down the hills through all the little channels that are normally dry.

By the end of the day Thursday the lake was so high that I took a picture.

But it kept raining.

Off and on Friday.

Pretty much all night Friday night.

All day Saturday.

And all night Saturday night.

We were lucky that we were camped on high ground and that none of the roads closed between us and town.

Today it quit raining and we went back over to Jamie’s, but it was too damp and cold to do much. Things are green…

and the flowers are out.

Tomorrow we leave and it’s supposed to be sunny, and all next week it should be sunny and warm.

Oh well, at least we were only under severe thunderstorm warnings and a tornado watch. We never got a tornado warning although there was a cell aimed at us that was developing a twist, but it dissipated.

Springtime in Arkansas!

Well I’m glad you weren’t too adversely affected by the bad parts and were able to enjoy the good parts – like the pretty flowers. Is that last picture of either pink or red dogwood?

Yes, pink dogwood on Jamie’s lot across the street from her house.

HI Jill, Your photos and description of the changing campground in Hot Springs fully illustrated the rising waters there. Glad you could keep above it and didn’t have any more severe weather than the rain. I imagine you have moved on now and I hope the warmer spring weather with calm skies are following you.

I emailed Molly Maigret and she is happy to join us hiking the nature preserve on May 15th (Thursday). I also want to check in with the Cornell people and hear what they are doing these days in the preserve. They did install an entry gate into the preserve from their property last year with a wooden bridge built by an Eagle scout over a significant ditch. They have a dedicated staff member now for the preserve and he has creative ideas.

Let’s watch the weather and plan to meet up to hike sometime in the morning. I’m open to your ideas about timing since you’ll be coming from Youngstown. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for our date- the nature preserve does tend to have watery areas especially in the spring, so I think waterproof boots or shoes will be a good idea.

I hope you and Bud are having good locations and weather now. Safe travels, and we really look forward to seeing you both!

    Jane and Rob
